For centuries, the traditional Japanese garden has offered a glimpse of the Japanese soul. Here,
we introduce two contemporary garden designers, Yasuo Kitayama and Shunmyo Masuno, to show
the evolution of these traditions. Kitayama, who has restored gardens in some of Kyoto’s most
renowned temples, builds complex designs using simple geometric forms. Masuno, meanwhile,
channels the spirit of Zen in gardens from Asia to Europe. These masters also offer advice
on how to create a Japanese garden anywhere in the world.
