Revive, Remake, Revere--Mottainai: The beauty of respectful reuse

Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai introduced the wider world to the concept of mottainai. This Japanese word expresses a sense of regret concerning waste. It conveys a sense of humility and respect for the intrinsic beauty in a material that is used to its fullest. We examine the spirit of mottainai across the spectrum of Japanese arts and crafts.
