Legacy of Craftsmanship on Crepe Paper
More than 100 years ago, Japanese fairy tales and other stories were compiled into chirimenbon, or crepe-paper books, printed from stunningly colorful woodblock prints. Little known even among Japanese, these elaborately crafted books were translated into many languages and carried to far corners of the globe. Book collector Alex Byrne discovered them in his home country of Australia a decade ago and has been captivated by their beauty and singular charm ever since. He takes Kateigaho International readers to visit the grandson of Takejiro Hasegawa, the creator of chirimenbon, to see some of the finest and best-preserved editions.
